THE PROBLEM

Egypt's Waste Crisis — A Problem Data Can Solve

Why we built EcoMetrics Egypt, and what it uncovered.

100 Million Tons. Every Single Year.

Egypt is one of the world's most waste-intensive nations by volume. With a population exceeding 100 million and rapid urbanization across Cairo, Giza, and the Delta, the country generates more than 100 million tons of solid waste annually — straining every collection, sorting, and disposal system in the country.

Despite this scale, between 80% and 88% of that waste ends up in open landfills and unregulated dumps. Plastic waste alone amounts to 5 million tons per year. Every ton dumped is a ton of recoverable economic value permanently removed from the supply chain.

The Egyptian government has recognized this challenge through Egypt Vision 2030, committing EGP 1–2 billion to recycling infrastructure and setting a formal national target of 60% recycling rate by 2027. The rate has grown from 10% in 2018 to 37% in 2024 — genuine progress, but the gap remains large.

Closing that gap requires more than infrastructure. It requires knowing exactly where the system breaks down, why it breaks down, and what fixing each failure point is worth in measurable tonnes of recovered material. That is what EcoMetrics Egypt answers.

"The gap between 37% and 60% will not close on its own — but data can show exactly where to push."

From Observation to Action

The EcoMetrics framework doesn't just report numbers. It traces the full journey of a ton of waste through every operational stage, identifies where value is lost, and quantifies the exact interventions with the highest potential impact.

Multi-Source Data

Operational records from collection, sorting, and processing stages across facilities, ingested via API and database queries.

Power BI Analytics

A star schema data model with advanced DAX measures, enabling multi-dimensional analysis across time, facility, material, and operator dimensions.
